Our barbering school is built on a foundation of tradition, hard work, and the pursuit of excellence. Our story has roots in generations past and continues on through our present students and friends. We invite you to learn more about the people, places, and events that shaped Maestro Barber University and its commitment to helping people achieve success.
1940'sIt's all his fault
The beginnings of Maestro Barber University can be traced to one source above all: the original Maestro, Nenad's grandfather. Respected in his town of Belgrade as one of the best hair stylists, he spent many years in the town, cutting hair for many loyal customers. His skill and dedication to his craft were well-known and valued by all his clients, earning him the respected title of "Maestro".
In his early years, Nenad Simic had many opportunities to witness his grandfather plying his craft in their town. Known among his valued customers and friends as "Maestro", Nenad's grandfather cut hair for dignitaries, models, fashionistas, and many of his fellow townsfolk. Seeing his dedication and skill, Nenad was inspired to follow in Maestro's footsteps. At the early age of 9, Nenad decided he too wanted to master the barbering craft and carry on Maestro's philosophy of excellence.
At 18 years old, Nenad took his first steps on the path to realizing his dream. Following in Maestro's footsteps, Nenad got his first job working in a barber shop in Belgrade. He spent several years cutting hair, serving customers, and honing his skills and craft. During this time, Nenad saw that there were many young people, particularly foster children, in his town in need. It was during this time, that Nenad began to develop his ambition to start a barbering school in order to help people create a solid future for their lives.
1997Coming to America
After 8 years cutting hair in Belgrade, Nenad decided it was time for a change. Seeing a chance for opportunity across the Atlantic, Nenad left Serbia to start a new life in the United States. The first of his family to travel to America, Nenad spent his first days learning English and settling into a new homeland.
Early in 1998, shortly after Nenad arrived in America, his beloved grandfather passed away at the age of 72. Though deeply saddened by the loss of his inspiration, Maestro would live on forever in the hearts of his family and especially in the legacy continued by Nenad in his own life and career.
2003A place of his own
Once he settled into life in the United States, Nenad laid the foundations for his future. Realizing another aspiration, he founded and began operating his very own barber shop. When considering a name for his new shop, Nenad immediately siezed upon the notion of honoring his grandfather's dedication and goodness of heart. Thus, Maestro Hair Studio was born.
After a decade of serving loyal and cherished customers in his own shop, Nenad (now himself lovingly referred to as 'Maestro' by customers and friends) realized his lifelong dream of creating a school for teaching and helping others. At the beginning of the year, he founded Maestro Barber University, and began teaching the craft and values of his grandfather. Expanding upon his location in Kernersville, NC, Maestro welcomed his first students.
